Are you interested in learning about beekeeping but not sure where to start? Have you tried beekeeping before but given up from frustration or failure? Most beekeepers share that the secret to success includes foundational training, strong healthy bee stock and support from experienced beekeepers.

WCOBA is a not-for-profit association of beekeepers helping beekeepers throughout west central Ohio. In conjunction with the Ohio State Beekeepers Association and other state and local organizations, WCOBA promotes beekeeping using modern (2013 / 2014) best practices and management techniques. Our members and affiliates work to improve the genetics and availability of locally adapted bee stocks in collaboration with the Ohio Queen Initiative.

Our Beginning Beekeeping School is a full day introductory course teaching the art and science of beekeeping. Learn basic honey bee biology, equipment and tools required, how to acquire bees, fundamental management techniques using the latest best practices, and how to get a honey bee colony through your first full year of beekeeping. The WCOBA team of instructors includes beekeepers with experience managing hundreds of colonies over the past 40 years, queen producers, a former bee inspector, and an OSBA Master Beekeeper program instructor.  Fees for the class are $65 per individual, $15 for each additional family member with a family registration.  Regsitration includes one copy of the course textbook (shared for a family registration).  We recommend you bring a notebook and pen for note taking.  Lunch is provided.

Seating is limited to 25 students and preference will be given to participants from across our region including Mercer, Darke, Miami, shelby, Auglaize, Hardin, Logan, Union, Champaign, and Clark counties.  The WCOBA Beginning Beekeeping School meets the course requirements for the Ohio Master Beekeeping Program Apprentice Beekeeper recognition.  The Ohio Master Beekeeper - Apprentice level recognition also requires passing an official field exercise conducted by Ohio State Beekeepers Assocation.  More information on the Ohio Master Beekeeping Program can be found here
